Danielle, Taylor, and Brian

We all like playing sports, and we all have a brother.

April 6th, 2011 Mixtures
We have test tubes, test tube rack, graduated cylinder, lap scoop, Zinc oxide, and copper sulfate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper(II)_sulfate#Uses
Copper sulfate is harmful, irritant, and can be danergous with the enviroment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_oxide
Zinc oxide is in plastics, paints, ceramics, glasses
Zinc oxide can be harmful depending on what it is mixed with.

10 Ml for each test tube.

Lab April 6th 2011
We are going to use 10 mL of water for each test tube.
2 test tubes with water in it
the other two will just chemicals in it, and see if they dissolve.

April 7th 2011
After we did our experiment the copper sulffate dissolved at the bottom of the test tube, the bottom of the test tube lookes blue, so its less dense.
Then when we did the Zinc oxide its more dense because it was moving around in the test tube. When you mix the the Zinc oxide it got all cloudy and that was called suspension.
When you look through the test tube its transparent, but the copper sulfate is more transparent because you can see through it a lot better then the Zinc oxide.

Today we did an experiment to determain if the amount of water effects the amount of Kool-Aid we had into a test tube.

When nail polish is dissolved in acetone, which substance is a solute and which is the solvent?

What is the difference between an element and a compound?

potassium_nitrateThis graph above explains what substance we used for our lab experiment.

Calcium Chloride(CaCl2)
*Ionic compound
*used on roads to control ice and dust
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_chloride

Sodium bicarbonate(NaHCO3)
*a white solid that is crystaline but often appears like a fine powder
*causes serious eye irritation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_bicarbonate

Bromothymol Blue(C27H28Br2O5)
*weak acid in a solution
*used for observing photosynthetic activities
*Below pH is yellow and above pH is blue

Water (H2O)
Using these chemicals above, we are going to form an expeiment to determine combinations of the coumpounds that react chemically.

We did an experiment to see if adding alka seltzer to water, if the mass of the reactants and porducts would change. It turns out that the mass never changed!!!!
alka_seltzer.jpg
Summary
In the end we had no change in the mass of the products our reactants. We did three trials. After these three trials we realized that there was no change when we added the alka seltzer!
